I discovered David Axelrod via his work sampled in DJ Shadow’s music. Axelrod came out of Los Angeles, working as a studio jazz drummer, TV soundtrack composer, and orchestral arranger. He began working with Cannonball Adderley, and with Lou Rawls before becoming the producer and arranger for The Virgin Prunes. That psychedelic group disbanded its original members, yet Axelrod carried on under the name.

His work stands in its own right, but it may be more familiar in snippets to listeners of Shadow, Lauryn Hill, De La Soul, Dr. Dre, The Beatnuts, Wu Tang Clan, Madlib, Lil Wayne, Pete Rock, Premier, and Mos Def.

One Response to “Sampled”

  1. Crisp, funky and animated with a machine like fluidity. I love the bass climbing around up and down through the other instruments.
